Here you will find free online tools for foreign language learning and a section of study hints, applicable to all areas of study. The central tool is a flashcard based vocabulary trainer for German, Spanish, French, Italian and English. All you have to do is choose a username and a password and create a new user account.  After this you can immediately start to improve your language skills.

Mixxer – the Language Exchange

The Mixxer is a free educational community developed by Dickenson College, provided as a free service for language learners and teachers to find a language partner for a language exchange. The language partner is someone who speaks the language you study as their native language and is studying your native language. The partners then meet online to help each other practice and learn a foreign language.

Digital Dialects

This site provides activities to support learners of 53 different languages.  The activities are animated, most with game-like characteristics.

Speedanki Japanese

This is truly a niche site, but if you are studying to pass the Japanese language proficiency test, This site is an interactive flashcard system designed to aid in the memorization of Japanese kanji and kanji compounds for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Though designed for the JLPT, this system of memorization will be useful to any students of Japanese looking to improve their Japanese reading ability.

Type in a word in their dictionary look-up, choose the language, and get definitions even for words that other sites can’t define.  In addition, scroll down to participate in online forums in one of several languages.

Dave’s ESL Café – a meeting place for teachers and students

The site is developed and maintained by Dave Sperling.  It includes a hosted discussion board for teachers and learners, as well as links to resources for students, teachers, and “everybody”.

Foreign Word

This is a foreign word translation site for PCs,.  This site provides online machine translation of text, advising that machine translation usually is not perfect, but will also usually at least provide the sense of the text.  The free PC translation software Xanadu also can be downloaded from this site.

The UniLang Wiki is a database of language- and linguistic-related information which is part Unilang, an online language community. Any UniLang member may edit and contribute to these pages.  Currently, many diverse topics are available, including one I sampled on archaic languages.  This is definitely a resource for adults or more language skilled older students, but is fascinating for the language groupie
